Why Cedar for Central Texas Fencing

Cedar is the right material for privacy fencing in Central Texas for four reasons. First, cedar has natural rot and insect resistance that pine and other softwoods do not have. Second, cedar handles Texas heat and humidity swings without warping as aggressively as other woods. Third, cedar weathers to a beautiful silver-gray color that many homeowners prefer to stained or painted finishes. Fourth, cedar is still cost-effective when you factor in replacement cycles compared to pine.

We install Western red cedar as our standard material. Western red cedar has tight grain, excellent dimensional stability, and the best weather resistance of any widely available cedar species. Lower-grade cedar is cheaper upfront, but the savings disappear when the fence starts cupping and cracking after three years.

Cedar Privacy Fence Styles We Build

Board-on-Board (Shadowbox)

Pickets alternate on both sides of the rails, giving you 100 percent privacy even as the wood shrinks over time. This is the most common HOA-approved style and the most durable. Slightly higher cost than stockade but worth the difference.

Stockade (Side-by-Side)

Standard side-by-side picket layout on one side of the rails. Less expensive than board-on-board and still provides good privacy when new. Will show small gaps as pickets shrink over time.

Cap and Trim

Adds a horizontal cap board across the top and a trim board below. Cleans up the appearance, protects the tops of pickets from weathering, and is required by many HOAs. Worth the upgrade on street-facing fence lines.

Dog-Ear Picket Top

Classic angled top on each picket. Standard on most residential installs. Pairs well with both stockade and board-on-board styles.

What Glacier Uses for Every Cedar Fence Install

Posts

4×4 Western red cedar or pressure-treated southern yellow pine posts set 24 to 30 inches deep in concrete. Post spacing never exceeds 8 feet. On windload-exposed properties we can go deeper or use metal post inserts for added rigidity.

Rails

Three 2×4 horizontal rails on 6-foot fences. Two rails only on shorter fences will eventually sag. Three is standard.

Pickets

Standard 5/8 inch thick Western red cedar pickets. We reject any picket with severe knots, cracks, or warping at install. Cheap installs let bad pickets through.

Hardware

Galvanized or stainless steel screws and hardware. Lake Belton and other humid-environment properties get stainless. Painted or plated fasteners rust within a few years and leave streaks on cedar.

Our Cedar Fence Installation Process

1. Free On-Site Estimate

We walk your property, measure the run, check grade and obstacles, and confirm property lines. HOAs, city permits, and utility locates are all identified at this stage.

2. HOA and Permit Handling

We prepare any HOA submission paperwork, pull city permits if needed, and call 811 for utility locates. You do not need to chase this paperwork yourself.

3. Material Delivery and Install

Cedar is delivered the day of install or the day before. Post holes are dug, posts set in concrete and allowed to cure appropriately. Rails and pickets go up in sequence. Most 150 to 300 foot residential installs complete in 2 to 5 working days depending on weather and soil.

4. Cleanup and Walkthrough

All debris, offcuts, and old fence materials are hauled away. We walk the final job with you, address any concerns on the spot, and provide your workmanship warranty in writing.

Raw Cedar or Stained? Our Take

Glacier installs cedar raw. No stain, no sealant, no paint as part of our standard install. Here is why.

Raw cedar weathers to a silver-gray color that most homeowners prefer after they see it. Staining cedar locks you into a maintenance cycle of re-staining every 2 to 3 years to keep the color consistent. Skip a cycle and the stain patches become uneven and uglier than natural weathering.

If you want to stain your fence after install, wait 4 to 6 weeks for the wood to dry out and off-gas, then apply a quality semi-transparent oil-based stain. Re-coat every 2 to 3 years. We can recommend products but we do not apply stain as part of the install.

Realistic Cost Expectations

Cedar privacy fencing in Central Texas typically runs between 25 and 45 dollars per linear foot installed, depending on style, height, soil conditions, accessibility, and hardware quality. Board-on-board with cap and trim costs more than basic stockade. Rocky limestone soils add to the price because post holes take longer. Cheap bids at 15 to 20 dollars per foot are usually skipping post depth, using lower grade cedar, or cutting rail count. The fence will fail early and cost you more in the long run.

Every Glacier quote is itemized and transparent. You see exactly what materials, hardware, and labor cost. No vague lump sums.

Cedar Privacy Fencing FAQ

How long does a cedar privacy fence last in Central Texas?

A properly installed Western red cedar fence with concrete-set posts and quality hardware will last 15 to 20 years in Central Texas. Fences in full sun weather faster than shaded ones. Staining every few years can extend the life to 20 to 25 years.

Is cedar better than pine or composite for privacy fencing?

Cedar is better than pine because it resists rot and insects naturally. Composite is more expensive upfront and most composite products are designed for decking, not fencing. Cedar is the best balance of cost, durability, and appearance for residential privacy fencing in Central Texas.

Do I need a permit to replace a fence?

Most cities in Central Texas do not require permits for residential fence replacements on existing property lines, as long as the fence is under 7 feet tall and is not a front-yard fence. We verify your specific situation before install and pull permits if needed.

What is the difference between board-on-board and stockade?

Stockade has pickets on one side of the rail, side by side. Board-on-board alternates pickets on both sides of the rail, so when pickets shrink over time you still have full privacy. Board-on-board costs slightly more but holds privacy longer.

How long does installation take?

Most 150 to 300 foot residential cedar fence installs complete in 2 to 5 working days, depending on soil, weather, and complexity. Larger jobs, rocky soil, or access issues can extend this. We give realistic timelines during the estimate.

What warranty do you offer on cedar fences?

Glacier provides a written workmanship warranty on every cedar fence install. We warranty against installation defects like leaning posts, loose rails, and structural issues. Natural cedar weathering, checking, and minor cracking are inherent to wood and are not warranty items.
