How to Spot Hail Damage on Your Roof and Siding (With Photos)

Central Texas Hail: What You're Dealing With

Central Texas sits in one of the most active hail corridors in the United States. The I-35 corridor from Austin through Waco sees significant hailstorms multiple times per year, typically during spring and early summer. McLennan County, Bell County, and Williamson County consistently rank among the highest in Texas for hail insurance claims.

Hail size matters significantly for damage assessment. Pea-sized hail (1/4 inch) rarely causes structural damage but can damage paint and soft metals. Quarter-sized hail (1 inch) begins to damage shingles, vinyl siding, and window screens. Golf ball-sized hail (1.75 inches) causes significant damage to roofing, siding, gutters, and can crack windows. Baseball-sized hail and larger causes catastrophic damage that's impossible to miss.

The tricky range is quarter to golf ball sized — damage is real but not always obvious from the ground. This is where a professional inspection becomes valuable.

Identifying Hail Damage on Asphalt Shingles

Hail damage on asphalt shingles manifests as dark spots where the granule surface has been knocked off, exposing the black asphalt mat underneath. These hits are typically random in pattern (not in straight lines, which indicates foot traffic damage) and consistent in size for a given storm.

From the ground, you may see dark spots or what looks like bruising on the shingle surface. However, ground-level inspection is unreliable — many forms of hail damage are only visible up close. This is why we always perform a roof-level inspection.

Functional damage vs. cosmetic damage: Not every hail mark constitutes a valid insurance claim. Insurers look for "functional damage" — hits that compromise the shingle's ability to shed water. A dent that cracks through the mat layer is functional damage. A mark that only disturbs surface granules without cracking may be considered cosmetic.

What to look for on the ground: Check soft metals first. If your mailbox, AC unit fins, or car hood show dents, your roof likely took hits too. Also check painted wood surfaces like fence posts and deck rails — hail leaves round marks where it chipped paint.

Spotting Hail Damage on Siding

Vinyl siding: Hail cracks vinyl in a characteristic pattern — a hole or crack with surrounding stress fractures radiating outward. Vinyl becomes more brittle with age and UV exposure, so older vinyl siding suffers more damage from the same size hail. Look for cracks on the upper portions of each siding course, which take direct hits, while the lower portions may be shielded by the overlap.

James Hardie fiber cement siding: Hail damage on fiber cement appears as chips, cracks, or divots in the surface. The material is more resistant than vinyl but can still be damaged by golf ball-sized and larger hail. Damage is typically cosmetic rather than structural, but compromised paint surfaces need attention to prevent moisture infiltration.

Wood siding: Hail damage appears as dents, dings, or splintered areas. Even minor hits expose bare wood to moisture, which can lead to rot if not addressed.

Aluminum siding: Shows dents without cracking. While aluminum is no longer commonly installed, many older Central Texas homes still have it. Denting is obvious and generally qualifies for insurance claims.

What to Do After a Hailstorm

Document everything immediately. Take photos of damage from multiple angles, including close-ups showing the size and severity of hits. Include reference objects (coins, rulers) in photos for scale. Document the date and approximate time of the storm.

Check your exterior surfaces systematically: roof (if safely accessible from the ground), siding on all four sides, gutters and downspouts, window screens and glass, AC condenser units, and any painted wood surfaces.

Contact your insurance company to file a claim within the timeframe specified in your policy (typically 1-2 years in Texas, but sooner is always better). Request a copy of the hail report for your area from your insurer.

Schedule a professional inspection. A qualified roofing and exterior contractor can identify damage that's invisible from the ground and provide documentation that supports your insurance claim. Glacier Home Exteriors offers free storm damage inspections throughout Central Texas — call (254) 265-8898 after any significant storm.

Do not sign with a storm chaser. After major hailstorms, door-to-door solicitors flood affected neighborhoods. Work with a local, established contractor who will be here long after the storm chasers have moved on.
