The difference is entirely in how the color gets applied and what that means for your project cost, timeline, warranty coverage, and long-term maintenance.

ColorPlus Technology: The Factory-Finished Option

James Hardie's ColorPlus Technology applies multiple coats of color in a factory-controlled environment. The finish is baked on under precise temperature and humidity conditions that cannot be replicated in the field.

The result is a coating that is more consistent, more durable, and more resistant to UV degradation than even the best field-applied paint. ColorPlus siding comes in approximately 30 standard colors designed specifically for the product, ranging from clean whites and soft grays to bold blues and warm earth tones.

The 15-year color warranty is the headline advantage. James Hardie warrants that ColorPlus siding will resist peeling, cracking, and chipping for 15 years from installation. This is separate from and in addition to the 30-year substrate warranty on the fiber cement itself. No field-applied paint carries a warranty anywhere close to this.

In Central Texas, where UV radiation is intense for 8-9 months of the year, the ColorPlus finish consistently outperforms field-applied paint. We have ColorPlus installations from 2015 that still look virtually new, while field-painted fiber cement from the same year is showing the first signs of chalking and fading.

Installation is faster with ColorPlus because there is no painting step after the siding goes up. The crew installs the boards, caulks the joints, and the project is complete. This typically saves 2-4 days of project time compared to primed siding that requires painting.

Touch-up is straightforward. James Hardie sells color-matched touch-up paint for every ColorPlus color, and small nicks or scratches can be addressed in minutes. For larger areas, the factory-matched paint blends seamlessly.

PrimePlus Primed Siding: The Field-Painted Option

James Hardie PrimePlus siding comes factory-primed with a proprietary primer designed specifically for fiber cement. The boards are ready for field-applied paint — no additional priming is needed, which saves a step compared to traditional primed products.

The primary advantage is unlimited color selection. While ColorPlus offers approximately 30 colors, primed siding can be painted any color from any manufacturer. If you have a specific shade in mind, need to match an existing accent color, or want to use a color from your HOA's approved palette that is not available in ColorPlus, primed siding is the answer.

Cost savings are meaningful. Primed siding boards typically cost $0.50-$1.00 less per square foot than ColorPlus boards. On a 2,000 square foot siding project, that translates to $1,000-$2,000 in material savings. However, you then pay for field painting, which typically costs $1.50-$3.00 per square foot for two coats of quality exterior paint. The net result is that primed siding ends up costing roughly the same as ColorPlus or slightly less, depending on paint quality and labor costs in your area.

The trade-off is warranty coverage. The field-applied paint carries only the paint manufacturer's warranty — typically 5-7 years for premium exterior paints from Sherwin-Williams. Compare that to ColorPlus's 15-year color warranty. In Central Texas sun, most field-applied paint needs refreshing every 7-10 years, meaning you will likely repaint once or twice during the period that ColorPlus would still be under warranty.

How Texas UV Exposure Affects Each Option

Central Texas receives approximately 230 sunny days per year with a UV index that regularly exceeds 10 from May through September. This intense, sustained UV exposure is the single biggest enemy of exterior color — and the factor that most clearly differentiates ColorPlus from field-applied paint.

ColorPlus finish is engineered to resist UV degradation at the molecular level. The factory application process bonds the color to the fiber cement substrate more deeply and evenly than brush or spray application can achieve. The multiple baked-on coats create a thicker, more uniform film that resists the micro-cracking that leads to peeling and chalking.

Field-applied paint, even premium formulations, sits on top of the primer rather than being bonded into it. UV radiation breaks down paint film from the surface inward, and the thinner, less uniform application typical of field work means the breakdown begins sooner. South and west-facing walls — which receive the most intense direct sun — show the difference first.

In practical terms, a ColorPlus installation in Central Texas maintains its original appearance for 12-18 years with minimal maintenance. A quality field-painted installation maintains its appearance for 7-10 years before fading and chalking become noticeable. On south and west-facing walls, subtract 2-3 years from each estimate.

The long-term cost calculation is where this matters most. If ColorPlus costs $1,000-$2,000 more upfront but delays repainting by 5-8 years, the savings on a single avoided repaint ($3,000-$6,000 for most homes) more than covers the premium. For homeowners planning to stay in their home for 15 or more years, ColorPlus is almost always the better financial decision.

Which Finish Should You Choose?

Choose ColorPlus if: You want the lowest total cost of ownership over 15-20 years. You prefer one of the available 30 colors. You want a faster installation with no painting phase. Long-term color warranty matters to you. You plan to stay in the home for 10 or more years.

Choose primed siding if: You need a specific color not available in ColorPlus. Your HOA requires a specific paint color match. You want the lowest upfront cost and plan to sell within 5-7 years. You want to change colors in the future without the added cost of stripping a factory finish.

For most Central Texas homeowners, we recommend ColorPlus. The 15-year color warranty, superior UV resistance, and lower lifetime cost make it the stronger choice for our climate. The upfront premium is modest and pays for itself by eliminating one or more repainting cycles.

However, primed siding with Sherwin-Williams paint is an excellent choice when color flexibility is the priority. We use Sherwin-Williams Duration for maximum longevity in Texas sun — it is the best field-applied exterior paint we have tested in our climate.
